What are the military uses of the island of Vieques?
According to the U.S. Navy, the island was used for live-fire practice, air-to-ground bombing, ship-to-shore shelling and various other maneuvers. Other countries also used the island for training purposes. During World War Two and the Cold War, Vieques and other Caribbean islands served as important military locations for the U.S. armed forces.
What does Vieques mean in Puerto Rico?
The population of Vieques was 8,249 at the 2020 Census. The island’s name is a Spanish spelling of a Taíno word said to mean “small island” or “small land”. It also has the nickname Isla Nena, usually translated as “Little Girl Island”, alluding to its perception as Puerto Rico’s little sister.
The Vieques, Puerto Rico Naval Training Range was located on the island of Vieques, just outside the main island of Puerto Rico. The training range was used for military training at the island. The military installation ended operations in 2001 and there was a military presence on the island from 1941 until 2003.
What happened to the US military in Puerto Rico?
With the continuation of bombing practices by the U.S. Navy, incursions to the practice grounds continued, until the U.S. government announced that the military would be leaving the island in May 2003. On March 31, 2004, the United States closed its Roosevelt Roads Naval Station on mainland Puerto Rico.
